Sewing 101

I have so many posts in my head right now. Unfortunately, my computer is acting up, so it's hard to upload pictures. Nevertheless, I'm pushing onward.

Exciting news: I just got my new sewing machine! I took a one-day sewing workshop a couple of weeks ago at Spark Craft Studios, a local craft store. During it, I produced my first complete sewing project, a simple bag.

Making it was so fun, that I knew I had to get a machine of my own. Right now, I'm in the process of making a mini skirt out of an old pair of jeans and some fabric I picked up. The main barrier is that I really need to invest in more thread. But I promise to post pics as soon as I get it done.

Lampshade Recycling Bin

Just to give y'all a sample of how my strange mind works, here is a quick project I did to re-use some junk and meet a need. As you can see below, I made a very handy small recycling bin with a furry lampshade that was going to waste in my closet.

To make my fuzzy paper basket, I simply pulled out the metal light bulb holder (It was quite easy--I just gave a gentle tug, but I'm sure that even the tough ones could be removed with good pliers).

Then I traced the small end of the lampshade on cardboard. Once I had the circle traced, I drew additional flaps on the cardboard. I cut out the cardboard, and then all I had to do was tape the flaps inside with clear packing tape (See below).

The whole project took 20 minutes at most. I'm proud of this simple task because it shows that the best re-use crafts combine need with whatever happens to be lying around. All it takes is creativity.

New Beginnings

Everyone deserves a chance to start over. Sometimes the first go-around was great, but we just want to try something new. Other times, a fresh start is welcome after a not-so-stellar first shot.I’ve decided to try changing up my life a bit. Inspired by the fabulous folks at Wardrobe Refashion, I’m hoping to start looking at creative ways to re-purpose things I don't need anymore. This blog will, hopefully, be a way to share the stuff I learn.
